Sugaring Season

"Sugaring Season is Beth Orton's first album in six years – a time in which she thought of giving up music. But after having two children, some therapy, and guitar lessons from folk great Bert Jansch, the Brit winner is back."

Beth Orton's first album in six years, Sugaring Season, was recorded in Portland, Oregon with producer Martine Tucker. Orton also called upon a host of old friends to contribute to the album, including keyboardist Rob Burger, bassist Sebastian Steinberg, and legendary jazz drummer Brian Blade, along with guitarists Marc Ribot and Ted Barnes and folksinger Sam Amidon. This was worth the wait.

  3. ved it all the way through! Magpie has a connotation of --well, they are considered misunderstood birds, or annoying birds, depending on whom you ask. I think she felt misunderstood for a long time, and that held her back, and maybe now she is tired of giving a f*%k ---the music exploded into a free for all right about in the middle.....awesome song!

Dawn Chorus has a unique sound....very pretty. I like how her (chorus? Hook? not exactly either because she has a lot going on here), but I'm referring to that cascading down the scale she does so softly several times.....and then jsut ba dop be dop, etc.....with the soft guitar backdrop....her voice is like getting a massage! For example, she does it at 2:16 and on for a while.

Candles was okay, but didn't cling to my brain right now. The violin is really good, but idk yet.

Something More Beautiful pulled me in right away---the slow, jazzy vibe, and after the minute mark, it gets even better.

Call Me the Breeze is....breezy! It's nice, just nice, I think.....for a second I was expecting a Skynyrd cover! That would be something.

Poison Tree has that haunting thing going on, but not my fave on here.....(although I seem to notice her voice is a little like Joni Mitchell's--or seems to stand out as sounding that way in this song-just an observation).

See Through Blue is happy, happy! The music and the words are light and positive.....like that A LOT! The carnival like piano adds a nice touch,a nd the plucking, and all the violins. GREAT little song!

Last Leaves of Autumn....I feel like the lyrics are very good and important and are trying to help teach a lesson, but the music was a bit boring for me, I don't know why.

State of Grace: intricate guitar playing, and I love her words...I think it is a personal prayer and also a declaration of overcoming hardships....with help. The music is gorgeous!

Mystery left me feeling much like I felt after Last Leaves of Autumn but more relaxed than bored!

This was certainly more than worth it.....super album, overall, and thansk again for sharing it with us!!

  4. see---now I see the light....mog is NOT sending any blogging notifs---no notices about posts! Tha t is crappy. I thought Rummy just was not posting, but clearly this was one post i had seen and commented on....so I went through mog and found his (this)old post, but in the meantime there were about 7 or 8 posts of his that I've missed. I hope I have time to catch up on them all, in addition to all the other great posts on and around here!
